waves on huron
turkish towels tossed
around our sunburnt necks
we flip-flop on wooden treads
leading us down enshrouded
in the canopy
of forested bluff
for one final adventure
after a day of delight
swift-moving shades of black have swept
across the unending blue
carrying their drowning deluge down
along the further shores but
their power remains
shaping the lake
in rhythmic rollers
nimbly we step through shifting
strands of pebbles, sand, and rock
arms outstretched high and wide
as if walking a tightrope
pushed back by the surges
that come one after another
ears filled with the roaring
heartbeat of the dark water
falling upon itself in foaming white
our eyes scan for elevation
looking for a floating freeride
we line up   backs to horizon
necks craned   bodies poised to pounce
in unison we count down
in a flurry of floundering legs and arms
in a moment we are
lifted
a glimpse of unweighted freedom
enthusiastic hollers of innate glee
abound as we resurface
standing up
we turn again towards the setting sun
eyes and hearts keen for another run
