by the lake
“that same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake.”
– matthew 13:1
might i steal a moment
before the crowds encircle and enclose
sit with me
no need for stealing
all i have
are moments
for you and with you
ancient lava flows
solidified over centuries
smoothed by the gentle
washing of wave upon wave
form shoreline seats
he had escaped the house
tested, accused, and questioned
to sit by the sea
could have
easily missed
the moment
as my soul has been
caught up in chasing after
words and wonderings
and yet i am
surprisingly reluctant
to draw near
not stoicism
just a distance
birthed between us
we need not words today
come close
as he pulls me
gently alongside
he simply looks out
at the canvas of blue
this sea he laid out
at the beginning of time
this moment with the Word
but having no words
the water weaving its way
again and again
through the rocky shore
a reminder of his constantcy
so subtly my soul slows
finding its breath in
sea’s rising and receding
i am
simply
here
before the crowds
before the work
before the worries of the day
i resist the urge
to ask more questions
